Good morning

Hurricane Ike is one for the history books. Lots of damage down in Galveston. Lots of downed trees, fences, roof shingles in my neck of the woods.

Power was knocked out about 3 am the morning of the storm then was restored 12 hours later. We were all excited but didn’t foresee that it was intermittent power! The power went off during a thunder storm last night about 11 pm. I sent my neighbor a text message saying, “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

So I decided to cook all the breakfast sausage this morning, made strawberry and blueberry pancakes and ate by candlelight. Elgin plugged in one of the TVs to the portable power supply and we all sat on the sofa catching up on the news.

All of a sudden the power kicks back on.

It was instantaneous. We all jumped up. Quick charge the laptop, charge the cell phone, run the dishwasher and for me, MAKE A POT OF COFFEE because we don’t know how long the power is going to stay on! LOL! So this morning after my workout on my exercise bike (which also uses electricity) I enjoyed a good cup of coffee.

There’s lots of debris in the streets and the mayor is still asking us to keep roads clear. So we’re home today and the kids will be out of school for the next three days.

My sister is still without water and power and friends are without power so we’re grateful that we have both and we’re praying that everyone get reconnected soon.

We went to the grocery store yesterday in search of hamburger meat … and there was one lone store open. The power was out as well and all their perishables had to be thrown out. There was a line to get in the store because they were only letting people in 50 at a time. I was able to score some precooked hamburgers that were in a deep freezer and still frozen solid.

I’m pretty certain that we’ll never ride out a Cat 3 or more hurricane. We’ll go visit El Paso. It was a bumpy night for sure. Not sure if I prefer hurricanes over earthquakes. Every earthquake I’ve encountered has been short but man it’s something to be awakened out of your sleep with the earth shaking underneath you. Don’t know if I prefer either at this point. Looking forward to that new heaven and new earth.

I’m pretty sure earthquakes and hurricanes won’t exist.
