We Can’t Have Them

She told us it couldn’t be done.

The young thing at the Ulta counter.

My daughter and I are in search of cheek bones; the kind you can create using bronzers, blush and powders. While we have the general concept of how to do this we wanted to see it done. In hindsight, maybe we should have gone to the MAC counter.

Lindsey went first.

As you see in the photos above, Lindsey’s more of a frappuccino color and I’m more of a mocha frap with some extra chocolate syrup. ;)

We kept waiting for the appearance of cheekbones but it never happened. I reluctantly let the Ulta associate attempt to give me what God did not and the results were dismal.

On the counter was a picture of exactly what we were looking for and the Ulta sales associate told us that we could not get those results because the model’s skin was lighter. So dark-skinned women can’t create that same illusion? Lindsey is lighter than me. You’re telling me that she can’t create the illusion either? Tyra Banks and Miss Lindsey are about the same complexion and Tyra is queen of the painted on cheekbone!

Surprisingly, I was not too angered by her response or ready to boycott Ulta. The poor dear is simply clueless. Clueless as to what works on our skin and how to make magic happen. Not her fault. It might have been her first job and they didn’t train her on darker skin tones.

I know full well that this phenomenon happens for women of color. I will say that I was a bit disheartened as I searched the Web for women of my skin tone with this desired effect. Most of the women have been lightened and brightened in Photoshop. Lauryn Hill is a dark sister but on some of her photos you wouldn’t know that!

I did come across a photo that proves that women our color can create cheekbones and I found her here. See! I told you!

So Miss Lindsey and I will lock ourselves in my bathroom with all kinds of powders, brozners and lots of makeup remover till we create those cheekbones and then proudly display them to the chick behind the Ulta counter.
